      Comments:

I started riding road bikes in 2011 when I bought a 2010 Trek 1.1 as a graduation gift for myself after finishing grad school. Then in 2014, I bought a 2014 Trek 1.1 after putting about 5000 miles on the 2010 bike. I also used a Serfas Gel Seat and 700x28 Bontrager tires on the Trek bikes that I owned before buying this Giant Defy 5 in June 2016. I transferred the same tires and seat over to this bike immediately upon purchase. I can only give fair comparison of this bike to the Trek 1.1's that I previously owned, as I have only test ridden other brands such as Cannondale, Felt, Bianchi, Specialized but have never owned them. This bike is very comfortable compared to the Trek 1.1's ( I liked the 1.1's, its not like they were poor bikes for me, but now after riding this one, I do prefer the comfort of the Giant Defy 5. All that being said, my characteristics are as follows: Male 45 years old 6'1" about 245-250 lbs I am just fine classifying myself as a rider, I am definitely NOT a racer! I average about 14-15mph while riding. A typical daily ride for me is about 20-25 miles (for workout purposes, not commuting to work). A typical week of riding for me this year is about 100 miles. Two weeks ago, I completed my first ever century ride. The one thing that the Trek 1.1's had over the Giant Defy 5 is that I only had to replace the rear cassette on the first 1.1 that I owned after about 2500 miles. I had to replace the rear cassette on the Giant right around 1000 miles, and I am going to need to replace (upgrade) the front crank pretty soon, too. Need something stiffer to help support the extra 50-75 lbs I carry, but I am also trying to lose. In the end, the comfort exceeds the relatively low cost replacements I have had to do so much sooner after purchase than previous bikes I have owned. As long as the expectation isn't to provide high speed rides (races) then this bike is an excellent value!

Great Bike and Fun to Ride

      By Brandon

      About Me

      Comments:

I've had this bike for two weeks and put over 150 miles on it already (about 10 a day). The XL is comfortable for a 6'2 male. It rides well without too much vibrations. I like the gearing and the shifters/brakes are easy to reach from the hooks. It's stable at all the speeds I can reach (and I topped out at about 27 with a tail wind one day). For the recreational/exercise rider, this is a great bike. It's not the lightest, not the fastest, and not the slickest looking, but I've gotten a few complements. This is an excellent bike! I recommend it for the beginning cyclist or someone looking for a solid exercise bike.

      About Me

      Comments:

I bought this bike at Montgomery Cyclery in Anderson a few months ago after doing extensive research on entry-level road bikes for quite some time before finally purchasing. I could not be happier with my purchase. Exceptional value for the $, super smooth, lightweight, easy shifting, very comfortable, fast and fun. Definitely recommend!

It is a finely tuned machine without breaking the bank. I have put over 250 miles on it in just under a month. She is smooth and agile. I rode it stock for about 100 miles before I installed the 105 5800 shifters, FD, RD and cassette (I did the "remove the 16 trick")! Very simple and inexpensive upgrade. She was speedy before and remains so now.

I am using this bike for road cycling and triathlon training and racing. It hasn't failed me yet, it is very comfortable and agile. I wouldn't call it lightweight, but it certainly isn't heavy either. Overall, a great entry-level bike. I have upgraded the seat, added clip-on aero bars, and may eventually upgrade the shifters.
