I was on the fence between the 2014 and 2015 models until Pedal Power finally got the newer model in to test ride. I ended up with the 2015 for the in-line cable routing and lighter overall weight. Both the 2014 and 2015 models ride great and are efficient bicycles, but the noticeably lighter weight of the 2015 Escape City makes it much zippier from a stoplight. Quite often I outpace traffic and have to slow down to avoid getting out of the traffic flow. On open roads, the bike performs as a comfortable upright-position road bike. It is very easy to maintain fast speeds, and although the tires are a wider 32mm compared to the low 20's of road bikes, it still handles tightly (not to mention the added cushioning for rough roads). Every day I am getting better at cornering at high speed for more efficient momentum-driven riding. Currently my top speed on this bike on a gradual downhill slope is approaching 40 mph. With a steeper hill and/or some more training, this bike will hit 50 mph without incident. The shifting in the rear derailleur is very smooth and positive throughout the range, especially when upshifting. Shifting the front three gears can be a little tricky, it may be something with the cable tension on my bike that needs adjusting. However, for most roads even with moderate hills, staying in the second gear is a safe bet. The added accessories on the City model compared to the bare Escape bicycles are custom-fitted to the bike, unlike aftermarket fenders/racks/bells, and they do their job nicely. The fenders keep a large majority of street debris and water off of the bike and crankset (though the front fender NEEDS a mudflap), the rack can hold 25kg safely, and the bell has a satisfying high-pitched "ping" that is easily heard by pedestrians. All in all, this is about the best bicycle you can get when factoring in price, performance, and the overall versatility with added accessories. 10-20 mile bike rides are no problem, and with more training, a 50-mile ride may be in my near future.
I bought this bike for a daily commute (to work, to lunch, back to work, and home. 10 miles daily total). Before this I hadn't ridden a bike in over 10 years. I was surprised at how easy it was to ride it. There is a perfect gear for every climb and descent. Thanks to the wide range of gears I can show up at the office without being a sweaty mess each morningThe best part is the bike is easy enough to ride that I'm not a sweaty mess when I get into the office.
As with another reviewer, the glory days are OVER! On days the old knees don't feel like getting out the road bike, this Giant Escape City is just about the perfect around town bike; especially when you live close to an [...] neighborhood of [...] appropriately & affectionately nick-named "The Hill". Is this a fast bike? Nope. Is it a comfortable bike that can climb hills? Yep. With all the features such as double wall rims, an 8 speed "cassette" rear cog, factory fenders, factory rear rack & reflective whitewall tires…how can you go wrong?
I ride the bike for tow path rides or a nice paced ride with friends. Be it on the tow path or on the paved bike path in the metro park it rides fantastic. The larger tires take the shock away from the rider and give you a smooth enjoyable ride. This bike is a great change of pace ride from the road bike. A great have fun bike.
It is time to get real. At 70, am I going to cross the US? Am I going to race? Do I want to be bent over on the drops?...can I bend over on the drops? The glory days are over. I went to buy a road bike but walked out with a comfortable bike instead. A bit of a lean on the handle bars, a comfortable seat and even a kick stand, my first. I can still ride hills using the granny gear and keep up with my friends. I can load it up for a nearby camping trip, or just a jacket and rain gear. The tires have some meat on them and at lower pressure, I am not concerned as much about a flat tire. I don't feel every crack or bump in the road. I'm tired of having a line up my back every time I ride through a puddle. Light weight fenders..I'm happy with my choice..the glory days may be over but I still enjoy several rides a week.
